Chiropractic Techniques and Therapy Methods We Offer In Our Chiropractic Clinic in San Carlos
There are various chiropractic techniques and manual therapy methods for structural and functional balancing. The methods range from very gently touching certain acupuncture points, to high-velocity low force “adjustments”. We use the following chiropractic techniques and therapy methods in our clinic in San Carlos.
Diversified Technique:
Diversified Technique is the classic chiropractic technique most people think of when they think of having a chiropractic adjustment. This method induces a comfortable slight gapping of the joints in the spine, which elicits a “popping” sound as the adjustment is given. The focus is on restoration to normal biomechanical function by hands-on application of specific line of drive high velocity, low force thrusts to specific areas of restricted motion of the vertebrae. This is highly effective for decreasing pain, nervous system irritation and restoration of normal spinal motion. This technique is beneficial when applied periodically to maintain optimal structural balancing and when there has been significant trauma such as a fall, athletic injury or auto accident where the body has been thrown out of alignment.
Cox Flexion Distraction:
Cox® Distraction, aka Cox Technic, is a safe, gentle alternative to back surgery for those 95% of patients whose conditions don’t demand surgical intervention or back surgery. Cox® Technique is a chiropractic technique that is extremely effective for relieving pain and resolving the cause of pain from ruptured discs, herniated discs, slipped discs, failed back surgery syndromes, leg pain, sciatica, neck pain, arm pain, low back pain, facet syndrome, bulging discs, spondylolisthesis, transitional segment, rib subluxations, thoracic spine pain, scoliosis, disc prolapse, etc. Acute back pain and spinal pain as well as sub acute back pain and chronic back pain can be addressed. According to many published research studies, there is between an 89% to 95% success rate for complete resolution of lumbar disc protrusions within approximately 10 weeks with the proper application of this procedure by a properly trained Doctor of Chiropractic. For additional information, read more at the Cox Technic site.
Activator Methods:
This chiropractic technique uses a hand-held instrument to restore proper spinal balance with extreme safety and comfort. Activator adjustments are suitable and comfortable for all types of patients, ranging from pregnant women, babies and children, to athletes and senior citizens. For additional information, read more at the Activator Method site.
Sacro-occipital Technique (SOT):
SOT is a method of chiropractic evaluation and treatment that concerns itself primarily with the cranial sacral respiratory mechanism. (Cranial refers to the skull and sacral refers to the bone at the bottom of the spine between the pelvis.) Cranial sacral respiration refers to a subtle wavelike oscillation in the covering of the brain and spinal cord. This motion is essential for normal functioning of the entire body. Accordingly, SOT is effective for a wide variety of health problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST):
CST was pioneered and developed by an osteopathic physician. CST is a gentle, manual method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system is comprised of the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. Similar to SOT, CST is also effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction. More information can be obtained at Upledger Institute site.
Proprioreceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF):
This manual therapy method is used to improve coordination, balance, strength and endurance. PNF is very helpful in retraining of coordination of joint motion of the shoulders, arms, hips and legs in injury rehabilitation, neurological impairment, post-surgical rehabilitation, and improved balance and prevention of falls in the elderly. It is also highly effective for performance improvement for athletics and elite athletes.
Temperomandibular Joint Therapy and bite balancing:
The temperomandibular joint (TMJ) is an often overlooked crucial component of any sort of structural-functional misalignment. About 40% to 60% of the nerves that leave the cranium go through the TMJ. Misalignment can cause a restriction of these nerves and create health problems in areas of the body affected by these nerves. Many apparently unassociated symptoms can be a result of TMJ misalignment and bite misalignments. We perform some simple, painless methods for balancing the TMJ and influencing bite balance. We also collaborate with a number of excellent biologic dentists for additional bite balancing dental work when necessary. Additionally, detoxification programs are performed for all patients who are having dental procedures.
Massage Therapy:
This modality goes hand in hand with many chiropractic and manual therapy techniques. It is highly beneficial for stress reduction, lymphatic drainage and cleansing, detoxification, and injury prevention.
